Step 1
First you need to take the Pen Tool and draw a shape similar to the one below. This is the most crucial part and you more than likely won't get it right first time. Click, hold and drag to create smooth corners with the Pen tool.

Step 2
Once you've finished drawing the shape we need to fill it. With the Pen still selected, right click and choose Make Selection. Click Ok and then goto Layer > Fill and make it grey for now. We will be changing this colour later.

Step 3
As you can see in the image above, the white part of the template extends past the page curl. Select the white layer, grab your eraser and rub it out! This layout also has a slight shadow on the right side so i need to erase a part of this too.

Step 4
Now we can get down to the details. Duplicate your page curl layer (shown below). Select the original page curl layer and fill it with black (shown below also).

Step 5
We now need to create the shadow of the curl. Making sure you still have the black curl layer selected go to Filter > Gaussian Blur and choose about 5px. You will now need to drop the opacity on that layer as pure black is too strong. Lower the opacity down to 40% or something you think looks about right. Now offset that layer so it looks like a realistic shadow (shown below).

Step 6
At the moment our shadow doesn't look quite right. We need to go at it with the eraser and the marquee tool with a feather to blend the bottom part of the shadow into the top part to make the lighting realistic.
• Erase the parts extending into the grey bg..
• Grab the marquee tool, look to the top of the screen and add a 10px feather.

• Drag out a selection and press backspace to blend.
• We can now make our curl white (because with the added shadow it will stand out from the white bg). To do this, do exactly as you did in step 4.

Step 7
Now we need to pick out some detail to make the curl look 3D. Grab the pen tool and draw out a shape like the one shown below. This will add some lighting to the shape.
Step 8 - Final Touches
• Fill this new selection with grey - Layer > New Filler Layer
• Add a small Gaussian blur to this small grey strip
• Lower its opacity to about 40% and position it as shown below.

• Now we just need to pick out the main curve of our curl (the right edge) and make it slightly darker to give it that 3d look. The best way to do this is to duplicate your white curl, change its colour to a light grey and then erase the parts you don't want. To make the transition cleaner you can get your blur tool out and go to work over it.
Finally
Feel free to duplicate some of the layers and move their positioning around. With something like this you'll be able to tell when its in the right position. You can download the psd below.
